Lars Rutten

Bridging History and Collecting

Lars Rutten combines historical research with many years of experience in the international coin trade. A historian and numismatist, he serves as Deputy Managing Director and Chief Numismatist of Leu Numismatik AG, where he is responsible for the scholarly cataloging of the printed auction catalogues and numerous web auctions of one of the world's leading numismatic auction houses. As Academic Director of the Leu Judaica Department, he also leads its scholarly work and helps shape its intellectual direction. Through rigorous descriptions and historical interpretation, he makes the significance of ancient coins accessible and gives collectors and institutions alike a deeper understanding of the stories these objects tell.

His areas of expertise include Greek, Jewish, Roman, and Byzantine numismatics, as well as the historical interpretation of ancient coinages. He combines careful assessment of authenticity, rarity, condition, and provenance with a nuanced understanding of their historical meaning. For him, a coin's significance is not exhausted by its rarity or market value; above all, it lies in the coin's place within a broader historical context.

As the author of numerous catalogue entries and scholarly contributions, Lars Rutten has a gift for communicating complex historical relationships clearly and accessibly. His work provides orientation and transparency for experienced collectors, museums, academic institutions, and anyone seeking to understand numismatic objects in their cultural and historical context.

‘History Gives a Collection Meaning.’

At the Leu Judaica Department, Lars Rutten is responsible for the Department's scholarly direction and the academic standards applied to the study and interpretation of objects. He brings historical research and responsible collecting together, ensuring that coins and medals are not only accurately attributed and professionally described, but also presented appropriately in terms of their significance to Jewish history. In this way, individual objects become intelligible historical witnesses whose meaning extends far beyond their material value.

With his historian's perspective, many years of experience, and ability to communicate scholarly findings clearly, Lars Rutten interprets collections as coherent documents of cultural history. He ensures that their stories are rigorously documented, communicated, and passed on to future generations.
